More good news

May 13th, 2010

Leading Edge Magazine has offered to buy my short story, “Meriel’s Brownie”. This is the same story I recently decided was too long to stand a chance at getting published. I’m happy to admit I was wrong about that. I’ll post details on when and where you can find “Meriel’s Brownie” in print as soon as I can.

Oh, and yay! May’s been a great month so far.

Vancouver is Awesome…for kids!

May 12th, 2010

The Playground!I’m excited to announce that I’m now writing for Vancouver is Awesome. In addition to a weekly roundup of kid-friendly events and activities, I’ll be writing features about great things to do in Vancouver with your kids. My first post went live today, have a look.

This is pretty much an ideal gig for me because 1) I love Vancouver, and 2) I love hanging out with my kid.

Also, if you live in Vancouver and you’re NOT reading Vancouver is Awesome, go there now! It’s one of my new most favourite things.

The Abduction up at Toad’s Corner

May 3rd, 2010

One of my short stories is now featured over at Toad’s Corner. “The Abduction” won first place in the Victoria Writers’ Society fiction contest a few years ago and was originally published in Island Writer Magazine. Check it out here.

Top one percentile

August 5th, 2009

I received my two best ever rejections this week.

Baen’s Universe passed on One Shoe Highway. They liked it – just not quite enough. Eric Flint had this to say:

One Shoe Highway made it all the way to the end before getting rejected.  That puts it easily in the top one percentile, as far as the magazine’s assessment of it is concerned.  It is quite possible that a different editor would have made a different decision.  Once you get to this level of quality when it comes to stories, the subjective factors start weighing very heavily.

The Abduction was rejected by Ty Drago at Allegory. Again, it wasn’t due to the story’s quality but a matter of editorial considerations:

The final decision is made by comparing the stories, more with an eye toward issue balance than the merits of one piece over another.  Yours is a GREAT piece, and I’m very very sorry that we can’t use it.

I’m very happy. Yeah, I’m still unpublished, but I’m closer than ever. It’s hard to feel bad about being in the top one percentile.

WorldCon

August 3rd, 2009

We are off to Montreal for the next ten days, where I will be attending my first WorldCon.

I’m panicking a little this morning. We spent our weekend here:

And here:

We did not spend any time thinking about our upcoming trip. Now we have just a few hours to pack, deliver our kitty to his temporary home and prepare for the open house our realtor is holding in our absence. Everything in the house seems to be covered in a thin layer of sand. We have much cleaning to do.

What’s new

July 22nd, 2009

One Shoe Highway is awaiting a final decision from the editors at Jim Baen’s Universe.

The Abduction is under consideration for reprint in Allegory.

I’ve got a couple of stories out collecting rejections, and one getting feedback from my online critique group.

I’m thinking about a second novel but I haven’t started working on one. I can’t decide what I want to write about next. I’ve already abandoned seven different ideas. Maybe number eight will stick?
